MOS Display during the 2007 Annual Palm Sunday Orchid Show at Laurel Park Place, Livonia. |

What a wonderful show. I can't express my satisfaction enough at working with such a fine organization as the MOS in putting on such a wonderful show. Everybody should be proud of all their efforts during the show. Space doesn't permit me to mention everybody, since our volunteers were so numerous, but I would especially like to recognize all of the committee heads. Tom and Carinne Korany who made sure we had food and beverages the entire weekend. Yvonne Whiteley who found clerks for judging, handled the raffle and made sure we had enough help for the vendors on Friday. Renie Smith who arranged for all the trophies. Glenda Lask who was our head judge. Kathy Mykolajenko who arranged the educational talks on Saturday and registered the plants. Dave Tigertt who gave an excellent talk on Saturday. Jane and Don Farrelly who designed our wonderful exhibit. I had a number of compliments from our judges that it was the best display they had seen this year. Betty Clindinning who got us on television for the first time, 4 minutes on channel 2. Last, out two show chairs, Carolyn Butcher and Diane Burton who made sure everything ran smoothly and worked countless hours before and during the show to make sure everything went smoothly. I'm already looking forward to next year. |

March 2007
As I sit here wondering if winter is ever going to end on a cold, icy and snowy Sunday afternoon, I'm confident that one day it will become warm again and I can move my orchids outdoors. But this weather sure is dreary and I cannot wait until it ends.
Our show schedule is in full swing with an orchid show every weekend somewhere in the Midwest. I just returned from Lansing where we put up a wonderful display. (see show report later in newsletter) Our next show is Ann Arbor and we need volunteers for both Friday set up and Sunday teardown. If you have a couple of hours to give, please drop by and lend a hand. Our Palm Sunday show is just around the corner. Hopefully everyone is getting their plants ready for our display.
We already have volunteers for a lot of the work needed to be completed, but still have some assignments to be fulfilled. At our March meeting, we will looking for more volunteers. Even if you are not sure about committing to something, please volunteer to help out. So stay warm, keep the flowers coming and see you in March. |

February 2007

Ron Ciesinki of Taylor Orchids talked about the finer points of repotting orchids during the January 2007 General Meeting |
|
We had a wonderful meeting in January. Over 70 people showed up on a snowy, cold winter day. Betty Clindinning, our new program director arranged for Ron Ciesinski of Taylor Orchids to give a talk. Ron gave an excellent talk on repotting and growing orchids. You could hear an audible gasp when Ron trimmed off most of the root on a Phalaenopsis.
Show season is about to get in full swing, with orchid shows almost every weekend for the next several months. What makes shows so wonderful are the society exhibits. We could use more volunteers for our away exhibits. So if you don't mind making a short drive and lending your hand for an hour or two, please volunteer to help out. As Ron aptly demonstrated, orchids are one tough plant. So don't be afraid to help out. A mistake won't kill a plant.
Lastly, it is only 4 more weeks till spring, winter is almost over. Golf season is ready to begin, oops wrong hobby. So stay warm and see you at our February meeting where Bruce Blyth will talk on my favourite orchids, Stanhopeas. |

January 2007
It is a fine December day and I am ready to hit the golf course. The weather this year has been unbelievable, going golfing in Michigan in December! I don't know what this will do to my orchids, but my heating bill is going to be a lot easier to pay.
As your new president, I am looking forward to working with you in the coming year to make our society even better. We have a great group of officers and trustees and this should be an exciting year. Our program director, Betty Clindinning, has already lined up a great group of speakers for 2007. Diane Burton and Carolyn Butcher have already started working our Palm Sunday Show and it is going to be great.
I hope everyone has a safe and healthy New Year and I look forward to seeing everyone in January.
